Story of the Medal
Starting in 2025, participant medals at Finlandia-Skiing will tell a new, shared story – one of the trail, the landscape, and the meaningful stopping points along the route. Over the next five years, each medal design will honor one of the Finlandia-Skiing trail stations – annual landmarks that are invaluable to both skiers and organizers.
These trail stations are more than just service points – they are part of the experience. They are offering presence, connection, and atmosphere.
Now, they are finally receiving the recognition they deserve – in the form of a medal.
The Trail, Captured in a Medal
The visual identity of the medals will evolve over the years, while preserving a consistent and distinctive design language. Just as the Finlandia route connects iconic locations, natural beauty, and unique landscapes. Over five years, the collection will come together as a unified and meaningful whole. The participant medals are designed by Sami Kulmala.
A Trail Rooted in the Ice Age
The Finlandia route traverses the Salpausselkä terrain — a landscape rich with ancient history. The Salpausselkä ridges were formed during the final stages of the last Ice Age, around 12,000 years ago, when the retreating glacier temporarily halted and deposited layers of soil and gravel along its edge. These ridges reach their highest elevation near Lahti — a region renowned for its varied terrain and strong skiing traditions.
The geology of Salpausselkä provides an ideal setting for a challenging and diverse course. Features such as kettle holes, ancient shorelines, and steep ridges make the ski trail dynamic and unique. It is no surprise that in 2022, the area gained international recognition by being designated part of the UNESCO Global Geopark network.
