The second day of the Finlandia Ski Marathon offered sunny conditions with a temperature of –13°C. Victories in the Worldloppet and Ski Classics Challengers races went to Hilla Niemelä and Veeti Pyykkö in the free technique.
Kati Roivas and Miro Karppanen emerged as the champions of Saturday’s 42 km classic technique race at Finlandia-hiihto, the iconic ski marathon held in Lahti.
Due to weather conditions, the Finlandia Ski Marathon routes have been shortened. The event will now be held on a 16 km loop on the Lahti ski trails.
Due to challenging snow conditions, the organizers of the Finlandia Ski Marathon are forced to deviate from the original course plan. As no snowfall is forecast for the Lahti region, the 62-kilometer course cannot be implemented. Snow conditions will also cause changes to the other race distances.
Snowmaking along the Finlandia Ski Marathon route is progressing at a rapid pace. Snow production has been underway since the beginning of the year, with well over 5,000 cubic metres of snow already produced.
The cold spell around the turn of the year and the existing natural snow cover are accelerating the opening of the ski trail network in the Lahti and Hollola region in Finland. Snowmaking is currently underway at several points along the Finlandia Ski Marathon route.
