Snowmaking in Full Swing on Ski Tracks

Snowmaking along the Finlandia Ski Marathon route is progressing at a rapid pace. Snow production has been underway since the beginning of the year, with well over 5,000 cubic metres of snow already produced.

In cooperation with the City of Lahti’s Sports Services, the Finlandia Ski Marathon organising committee produces and spreads snow on the track bases. Artificial snow bonds better to the ground when combined with the snow that fell during early-year cold periods. During snowmaking operations, skiers are asked to give the workers space to ensure safety and avoid hazardous situations.

“Natural snowfall has been insufficient and the snow is very light and loose, so it does not settle on the ground. Artificial snow helps us create a solid track of about 20 kilometres, but we definitely need more snowfall in the Lahti region,” says Event Director Markku Levanen, who also thanks the City of Lahti for its excellent cooperation in enabling suitable conditions.

Due to the influence of the Salpausselkä ridge, weather conditions and snowfall can vary across the Lahti area. Snow conditions are being closely monitored, and the organisation is working to provide the best possible ski tracks. If route changes are necessary, information will be communicated during week 5.
